![]() Our author has, of course, avoided this partisan approach and has given a most fair account but then he is blessed by being a Highlander himself, as well as being a most conscientious scholar. This is particularly true of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and, indeed, some twentieth century writers – who were almost invariable Whig in sympathy and violently anti-Highland (of which they knew remarkably little). When we come to historical times written accounts of important events, including battles, are hard to check due often to deliberate destruction, so that we find the interpretation of these happenings vary, depending on the sympathies or interests of the writer. Clarence Finlayson gives a clear and exciting picture of these far-off days, well salted with very old legendary stories of the great ‘giant heroes’ as well as the Fians and fairies of our Highlands. This applied also to the British Isles, especially Ireland, and trade between that country and Scotland has existed for thousands of years. Previously, eminent archeologists calculated their dates from inscriptions written at the time of the first Pharaoh indeed, there was no other way until carbon dating was developed. The metal work especially is of a very high quality and pre-dates artefacts introduced from the Middle East by way of Egypt. Pre-history is a difficult subject, and the advent of carbon dating together with the recent finds along the course of the river Danube, especially in Bulgaria, have not only pushed back the dates of many ‘finds’ of advanced metalurgical craftmanship but also that of stone structures with religious and burial significance, and that of many types of duns (forts) as well. It is well researched and gives a vivid and well balanced account of our strath* through the ages. Indeed, the author, Kenny MacMaster, Mrs Littlejohn (nee MacRae), my late younger brother and I, sat in the same class room in Fodderty school. Both of us spent some of the happiest days of our lives in this beautiful place. I am delighted to write a short foreword for Clarence Finlayson’s The Strath. He outlines the pre-history of the area, and its development down to our own time: the establishment of the Spa, the arrival of the railway, the appearance of the first aeroplane, the social and religious life, the fascinating prophecies of the Brahan Seer – all these and so much more! The author, born and reared in Strathpeffer, describes ‘this jewel in the Highland casket’ with the devotion of a Highlander. Lord CromartieĪnd so it does, with charming historical allusions, old legends and tales, and sparkling humour. It is well researched and gives a vivid and well balanced account of our strath through the ages. No country, no place was ever for a moment so delightful to my soul. Near here is a valley, birchwoods, heather and a stream. This book is dedicated to my Parents who brought me up in the Strath, and to my Wife without whose practical encouragement it would not have been produced. ![]() Character appraisal and management plan.Strathpeffer Spa Golf Course – Bar Restaurant.Strathpeffer Community Development Trust.Highland Museum of Childhood – Gift Shop. However, it will recreate as much as possible and inform you of any problems. * Due to differences in content between the app and the online game, the app may not be able to completely recreate your pony.
